The Gold Ring

As a country-reared-child I looked forward to my families trips into the nearest town. The main attraction for all ages was a vintage carousel. I loved to go to the park where the carousel had been the main event for a century. The merry-go-round allowed me to go in circles and get that little buzz from the repetitive action, but most of all I wanted to snatch the golden ring.

While the horse/swan/goat/rabbit moved up and down as the platform went round and round, the challenge was to grab a ring from an extended arm. Each rider could lean to the side of her/his creature and try to snatch a ring from the holder. Most of the rings were silver, but the gold ring would get the winner a free ride and a prize.

There were two rows of majestic structures

IMG_1980

and I rushed to get an outside horse closer to reach for the ring extender. If I didn’t run fast enough I was willing to trade my silver rings (silver rings could be collected and used to get free stuff) in order to ride a four-legged beast. There was something about the smooth leather of the halter and lead, the vibrant colors of the saddle and sometimes sticky neck.

I wanted a gold ring more than cotton candy or other sweet treat.

Finally, one Saturday we went to the park and I obtained a prime horse in the wondrous menagerie. The ice-cream truck type music seemed louder that day. On the last round I leaned to reach for the ring and noticed it appeared shinier than usual. Could it be the gold ring?

I slid to the side and reached. My finger slipped, disappointment rushed through me until my pinkie finger caught the ring.

GOLD.

Years later I challenge myself to try for the gold through my writing. Entertainment is my goal, but to obtain that gold ring is to know the reader enjoyed the story—felt the characters’ joy, pain, and experienced the heart-throbbing excitement of the fast-paced suspense.

The prize is a positive review. Possible readers want to get an idea of the story’s value and content. Obtainable shiny gold beckons, teasing me with what did the reader think of the story. Will you extend that precious ring?

And as usual once you have the gold ring, honor of any sort, you want it again and again.

What’s your gold ring story?

Super Blue Blood Full Moon

One hundred and fifty years ago Earth experienced a super blue blood full moon…so how could I not wait and watch for the one predicted for January 31,2018?

When a lunar eclipse occurs, the moon darkens as it moves into the Earth’s shadow, and when the moon is completely shadowed, it doesn’t go completely black; instead, it appears to be red or a blood moon. This phenomenon is known as Rayleigh Scattering.

Typically a full moon occurs once a month or there are 29.5 days between full moons; however, sometimes it works out we have two full moons, i.e. blue moon. January 2nd we saw a full moon and now we’ll see the second.

This super blue moon will cross paths with the Earth’s shadow making it a super blue blood moon eclipse.

The only thing more unusual would be to view the Dark Moon Goddess, Hecate. Hecate comes out to play during black nights when the moon is hidden. She is associated with deeds of the Crossway, which are ghostly places of evil magic.

If you’re out tonight and happen to be where three roads intersect-beware. Whatever you do, don’t hit a deer-her favorite of all wild animals. Hecate isn’t the nicest goddess and as with most of divinities good and evil is an uncertainty.

Edith Hamilton states in her Mythology book:

Hecate of hell,

Mighty to shatter every stubborn thing.

Hark! Hark! Her hounds are baying through the town.

Where three roads meet, there she is standing.

Have a wonderful super blue blood full moon eclipse–who knows when the next one will occur!

If I’m lucky—a photo will be attached later. Visit my site again Well …cloudy and even with the Nikkon I couldn’t get a clear shot in the Hoosier state. Maybe in my next lifetime?

Considering the length, I’m quite impressed with what JJ Keller did with this story. This one gives you a lot of bang-for-the-buck…no pun intended.

In addition to the suspense, Undercover Housewife is all about the romance, with the added bonus of tastefully written sex scenes. You gotta love that…and who doesn’t love a hot police detective who’s there to protect and serve? (Or is that protect and service?-oops, sorry!) lol

Undercover Housewife adds together a story filled with mistrust and a long time unrequited love and with a mystery case. Nikki is a woman coming to terms with her new life and finding that she really didn’t like the woman she became. The hero, Josh, is finally fulfilling the dream of getting the woman he’s wanted for over twenty years. Add to that the supporting cast of Josh’s partner Calvin and his gay antics, and this book is a fine piece of entertainment. Roni

Five Mystique Moons for Dark Shadows

DARK SHADOWS by J.J. Keller

Momma Mia! I need a cold shower and some aspirin. There was so much passion in DARK SHADOWS that I thought my head would explode. I LOVE THIS BOOK!! In fact, I love this book so much that I nearly blew off finishing my day’s work so that I could finish it in one setting. Duty called, however, and I got to it as soon as I could. And what a finish! DARK SHADOWS has it all: Good versus Evil; Love, Lust and Secrets competing for dominance; boundless love and those velvet ties that transcend even the strangest of circumstances.** What a ride! As I said before, I LOVE this story. **

Anyway, this book is fabulous and romantic and going on my Keeper shelf. If J.J. Keller has more books in this line, feel free to push them in this direction. Fan for Life!! That’s me.

This gem of a romance grabbed my undivided attention from the very first paragraph and didn’t let go until I’d raced to the final page. This fast paced and well plotted story is filled with all the things that make a book great…suspense, danger, deceit, bigotry and intense sizzling attraction that blooms into deep and abiding love. ** One of the best and most unexpected gems in this book is diabolical child predator… ** The scary thing about this premise is …** After all, checks and balances of power are only as good as the men and woman who follow them.

“Emily.”

“Yes, I’m here,” Emily Lucent responded in a whisper, yearning to hear her name again. The gentle, lovelorn utterance, tempting and mesmerizing, created a stronger need to see the speaker. His Scottish accent made his bereavement, if she could call it that, all the more intense. She wanted to help him find the love he had apparently lost. She longed to see him.

For the past few months the voice had grown stronger and more frequent as the days passed. He called her name in the pre‐dawn and lately during the course of the day. Her heart would race with anticipation. When would she hear the sweet harmonious sound again? Alone in the house, without the background noise of a television or music, sometimes she would hope to hear it, try to hear it.

Hear him.
Hear her name.
Emily.
She questioned her sanity. Yet, the deep, clear masculine voice sweetly lulled and soothed her. Restlessness and greed took over. Despite the fear of lunacy, she wanted more, needed more. She wished to see the unearthly being who spoke to her.

The Watcher

jjK_TheWatcher150x225

Mikhail gathered tarot cards and shuffled the deck. “You need to shuffle this once and fan out the cards. Pick any three cards from the deck and place them face up on the table. The second card should be placed to the left of the first card. The third card placed on the right of the first card. You must concentrate on one aspect of a decision to be made or question while drawing the card.”

A force pulled her further into this web of mystery and mysticism. She must discover, divine or infer the source of the voice. Good or bad.

Earthly or unearthly.
Angelic or demonic.
Ghost or hallucination.
She shuffled, drew out three cards, and placed them face up on the table. Mikhail watched closely. They carefully viewed the cards on the table top. She threw her head back and stared at the door. Emily glanced behind her, thinking Melody had come into the room. Empty space. A shiver of unease rippled over her skin. She returned her attention back to Mikhail. The fortune teller removed the turban and combed her fingers through her hair.

“Emily, I must ask you if you’re a religious person.”

“I don’t know what that has to do with the forecast of my future, but I was raised as a Catholic. For the past two years I haven’t attended mass. Although, I believe I’m a spiritual person.” She lifted her glance from the elaborate, elegantly detailed, tarot cards to connect with Mikhail’s gaze.

“The voice is not a hallucination and does not belong to a…ghost.” Mikhail bit her lower lip. The white of her teeth gleamed against the red lipstick.

Seasonal Meaning

IMG_1783

I love to place words in an order to make a story come alive and having a sweet-happy-ending gives the tale a happy-happy-joy-joy feeling to the reader. The best time to market my books is during the holiday season, but the days are filled with friends, work events and family. As a result forgiveness is the theme for my seasonal blog.

I forgive my friends and myself for not being a good friend to the people from my past life…distance does not make the heart grow fonder. How about you? Do you have friends you’ve lost contact with and this season want to reconnect? Facebook may make it seem quick and easy, but face-to-face is more important-right?

Work events are what they are-I like to dress in evening/formal garments and chat with strangers. I hope the new acquaintances forgive me for not listening to their blah blah blah while I create new characters by using their behaviors and sometimes-odd physical anomalies.

Family, whew this is a deep well and  I don’t want to expose all of my vulnerabilities. My father and I are close; he was my mentor, guardian, teacher, confidant, and stable platform that allowed me to grow as an individual. I recently learned my siblings  might not have had the same perception of our family as I do. I’m not sure how to describe the heartbreaking lack of familial connection over the years. I guess I’ll just say I forgive them.

Happy holidays to all and to all a forgiving new year!

Hoppy Hop Brew

IMG_1239

In Mystic Love Joe, the hero, needed information about a healer…and not one person in Cyan, Indiana acknowledged the shaman existed.

Joe went to a local pub, Brewhouse, in order to get close to the community members. Brewhouse made their own beer from organic local hops. My father enjoys creating his own wines and beers, so I had a little knowledge about the process of making a brew.

I won’t bore you with the details of how to harvest, dry, and add to the beer/ale to provide balance, the sweetness of the malt sugars and bitterness. Trust me, my dad had a few misses before he got the finish perfected. The Brewhouse beer was distinct and the brewers had perfected the FWH (First Wort Hopping).

Joe had to consume a lot of beer in order to get information. He enjoyed sharing…and got the details he needed…at least he thought he had.

Joe staggered into Ames Mansion, a little past midnight, stomach–sloshing full of Brewhouse’s homemade beer. Blurry–eyed, he peered into the library. Ericka sat hunched over her stacks of literature investigating her client or magic. The perfect man didn’t exist, so why try to find one?

“Honey, I’m home.” He didn’t reign in the illogical jealousy, but bee–lined to the side of the desk and propped his hind quarters on the edge. “Did you miss me?”

“You’re an insufferable drunken ass. Get off my desk.” Her dagger–pointed red fingernails shoved his leg. If he could feel pain, it probably would have hurt.

He stroked the inside of her wrist resting on the desktop. “Not until you answer my question. I’m curious.” He tapped her arm.

Her focus left her lawyer bible and met his stare. “You invited me to stay, but not in your room. I felt your hands caressing me as you hid my nakedness from your friend. I try to play nice, and you shove me away. You can’t tell me announcing only sex wasn’t a ploy to stop me, to tease me. What is it you really want from me, Ericka?”

“I want you to leave this office.” She jerked her hand from under his and stood.

Should he punish himself and enjoy the end of the evening? Already bedeviled, he’d at least feel alive. He slid from the desk, closed in on her, leaned into her curves. The light brown circles pulsed around the black centers of her eyes, heated lust sparked. Pheromones surrounded him, trailed into his nostrils tantalizing him, sending him further into an alternate reality. He became the beast he so desperately attempted to shed. “Before or after a kiss?”

A shadow of a smile appeared. “I’ll forgive this transgression, Joe, because you’ve been tapping the keg.” Her grumpy voice and quick full-fledged smile enticed his groin to life.

He quirked an eyebrow, at least he thought he lifted the right side of his face. “Drinking or an attempt at a kiss? I don’t have a drinking problem, actually take a sip at weddings and New Year’s. However, the hot waitress kept our glasses full. And thoughts of…”

“Leave.”

Road Trip to Old Stone Fort

The setting for Mystic Love was created from a road trip my family took a few years ago.

We were driving to Florida for spring break and took a rest stop in Tennessee. I’d been reading about ley lines and how the underground alignments of places hold a mystical power. And what do you know–Old Stone Fort Park was at the next exit.

Fee paid and car parked we shed our over coats and embraced the warmer temperature. The boys wanted to go to the site and get it over with

Instead we walked the trail that looped around. At the entrance of the ceremonial site were two mounds of soil, perfectly formed. The park had been created during the Woodland period so pedestal mounds…much like Native American burial grounds found in the northern Indiana area of my parents homestead… were typical in a religious place.

I stood in the center of the religious area and closed my eyes. I let the sounds of rushing waters from the Duck Rivers and the birds cooing in the leafless tree branches surround me. Earth scents from the warm fresh breeze, mixing with the fallen leaves and pungent waterfalls took me to another place. Peacefulness beyond anything I’d experienced before set over me. I could almost feel the magic in the area.

Until, my eldest son shouted into my ear.

The spell was broken, but I’ve never forgotten the special emotions I experienced.

Do ley lines hold mystical powers?

Mystic Love

Ericka Gilmore dabbles in life and death when she tries to conjure a ghost lover. But when flesh and blood, Joe Reeves appears on her doorstep in the midst of a storm, she has to rethink her destiny.

A car accident left the former cop with the ability to foresee death. No longer willing to watch people he cares about die, Joe goes in search of a shaman to remove his “gift”. His remedy until then is to avoid all relationships. But like a lightning strike, he experiences a strong connection with Ericka. A nearby mystical ley line could be Joe’s solution if he and Ericka combine their gifts. But her secret past and his fear of seeing her death keep them at odds.

At first, his mouth didn’t move, but after a couple of seconds, he pressed into her. She flicked the tip of her tongue over his mouth, outlining the curves, and then slid it between his lips. His tongue played with hers. Sharp, decadent longing powered through her.

Wait a minute, he didn’t taste like she’d imagined. He tasted like mint and human. She touched whatever smooth cool skin she could find available between the coat and his neck and shoulders. Strong and virile hot body. She inhaled, taking in his scent; fragrant late fall wind and the odor of male sweat.

Sweat? Wet skin? She licked her lips, savoring the zest. A spear of lightning brightened the sky. Six foot three. Left ear piercing. Broad chest. Wrangler posture, with one knee bent.

Her heart thumped harder, pounding strong in her chest.

Whom had she kissed?

****

Joe supported her, keeping her in an upright position. Definitely a her as supple breasts snuggled tight against his chest. Her robe opened, and he fought the urge to remove his own garments to feel her warm body against his, flesh to flesh.

Lips tasting of wine connected with his, insistent and passionate. Six months ago, he embarked on his solo quest, but it hadn’t been so long that he couldn’t remember previous intimacies, and those encounters didn’t compare to her lavish kisses. Whew, hot, he’d go with the flow for a little longer.

She jerked, and then shoved him away. Sadly, the kiss had been a mistake, and from the flash of surprise crossing her face, she’d realized it as well. The pale blue, almost white, towel came loose from her head. She snapped the cloth off. Sexy dark ringlets fell in twisted disarray to her shoulders.

Joe had been lucky enough to catch a joyful kiss and snuggle. He’d delighted in the touch of her lips, the scent of her womanhood, and her wonderful nipples piercing into his thin, sodden shirt. Enjoying the mistake and resulting benefits, he grinned.

The gleam in her eyes went from surprise to anger. With a shaking hand, she wiped her luscious pink mouth.

He stood in a quandary and debated how to explain. Under the circumstances, she wouldn’t accuse him of a forced entry.

“Sorry. No lights. I didn’t hear a security system buzz. I would’ve shouted.” He took a step. “Instead of coming inside.”

She retreated.

Damn. He’d be sleeping in the rain after all.

Review:
I just finished reading Last Chance at Love. I truly enjoyed it.
I loved that sexy cupid at the start,
the gorgeous art work Sam and Alyson made,
Tina’s growing understanding,
and the depth of the emotion as the story built to resolution.
A feel good factor of 10.

Excerpt:

Stein Laxdale walked down the corridor reviewing his notes. He spun around to find the elevators. Damn, somehow he had gotten lost in the maze of Yellow Fever. Who named a hotel, Yellow Fever? Who would arrange a high-level meeting at a hotel called Yellow Fever? Kerry McClure, that’s who.
Rune Technologies would not succeed without the deal with McClure Ventures. Everything he and Ian had worked for depended on this one business contract. So, if the man wanted to meet in a casino, then Stein would meet him in the casino. He’d meet him in the kitchen, if needed, to get the agreement signed.
He had to secure this deal.
A service elevator door swished open. He shoved the notes into his swim trunk’s pocket, folded the shirt over his forearm, and stepped inside. He’d never get used to jet-lag. He punched the dim yellow button, and took a step back as he ran a hand through his hair. He had to get some normalcy in his life.
“Stop,” a woman’s voice said, as a small hand pressed against his back.
He turned and took a pace back. A gypsy stood before him, a sexy gypsy wearing a long flowing orange and gold skirt, with a white off-the-shoulder blouse and no bra. He had to look, it was Vegas after all and he was a man in need of creature comforts. He guessed her to be about five-foot-six with breasts that didn’t appear to be silicone-based. They were full, smooth and pliable as they rose and fell as she breathed, pushing against the tiny bit of supportive elastic of the see-through blouse.
He raised his gaze, her head remained bowed. She smelled like an exotic flower. He placed two fingers under her chin and lifted her face. She pulled back. Startled from his touch? In the next blink, her eyes softened. When he lowered his hand to hang limp at his side, her stance relaxed. Magnificent dark brown eyes stood out on her beautiful, delicate face. The gold scarf wrapped around her head hid most of her light brown hair, but added a glint to her eyes. She shifted from foot to foot as she straightened her blouse and tightned the belted scarf around her tiny waist.
“I’m sorry… Magda?” he nodded toward her name badge.
She shoved her blouse up onto her shoulders, closing off the gap which had allowed him full view of her breasts. “Quite all right. You didn’t see me.”
Kerry didn’t correct him. Her name badge sported Magda because she would perform as a gypsy in the Magda tent for the library fundraiser. She ran her glance from his eyes to his bare chest to his tight swim trunks, keeping her gaze there a little too long. “Are you with the Chippendales?”
She clamped her teeth on her quivering lip to hold the nervous laughter inside. Goodness, he was gorgeous. His swim trunks weren’t the typical boxer style, but tight fitting, with bulging pockets. Bits of white paper peeked out of one and the imprint of a cell phone outlined the other.
“No.” He unfolded his shirt and slid it over his head. The elevator jerked to a stop.
She crashed into him and grabbed at his waist with both hands. He’d pushed his arms through the sleeves, but the cloth hadn’t dropped into place before her fingers slid over the heat of his stomach. The cords of his slim waist and muscular stomach made her want to explore. Her heart pounded against her ribcage.
Chart the unknown.

Larkspur at Long and Short Reviews had this to say: Holy Cow what a great read! Ms. Keller gives us a love at first sight story. Stein and Kerry make a great hero and heroine.
I loved the characters, they were well developed and enjoyable to get to know. The writing style was great and was a credit to the author telling such a well written story confined in 148 short pages. For more visit: buy

A true-to-life Kerry McClure had this to say:

“J.J.,
I just finished the book and I absolutely loved it!! I felt like I (Kerry McClure) was on a little vacation! I have told many friends about it so I hope they purchase it too!! My middle name is Jessica and my Maiden name was Cameron so the part about the limo driver and Jessica – I was seeing my ‘names’ everywhere! I really liked the end! Great twist and it explained so much! Thank you and good luck on your next novel!
Sincerely, Kerry McClure”

I must say, I don’t think a review could make me as happy as this one. Thank you!
